A list of Protein Explorer-compatible browsers is
below.
Netscape 7.1 or later
(or current versions of
Mozilla
or
FireFox)
(Windows only):
Supports all of PE's capabilities. Requires
manual installation of the MDL Chime plugin.
Download the current version from
netscape.com
(or
mozilla.org
or
getfirefox.com).
See also Protein Explorer's
implementation for these browsers.
Thanks are due
Enrique Castro (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)
who solved the key compatibility issues.
Netscape Communicator 4.5-4.8: (Windows or Apple Macintosh): Supports all of PE's capabilities. Automatic installation of MDL Chime. Download 4.8x from www.netscape.com. Do not get version 6. Although Netscape does not mention it, 4.8 works just fine in Windows ME and XP, and in OS X:Classic (see Tips and Techniques for OS X). Under Tools in the left column, click on Browser Central. There, click on Product Archive. If Netscape has changed their site since this was written in early 2005, you may have to look around their site in order to find Netscape 4.8x. Look for the newest version in the 4.8 series, "4.8x". (For example, 4.81 would be later than 4.8). When asked to "Choose Component", the "base" is smaller than the "complete" download. Either is sufficient.
Internet Explorer (Windows only): PE's Features of the Molecule control panel does not work (details) in Internet Explorer, but everything else does. Automatic installation of MDL Chime. To update, start Internet Explorer. In Internet Explorer, open the Tools menu at the very top, and click on Windows Update. Thanks are due Paul Pillot and Jean-Philippe Demers who volunteered key contribitions making PE work in IE.
If you wish to test running Protein Explorer in your current browser
even if we don't think it will run, you can
(not recommended). You may not recognize whether Protein Explorer is
operating properly unless you have experience with it in a fully
compatible browser.
Browser downloading instructions are above at the top of this page.
