What should the "pink ball" look like? Answer:
Like this except pink (this ball is magenta).
Caution: this is NOT MDL Chime working, but
a snapshot of what it looks like when it is working!

Windows:
Later versions of MDL Chime "2.6SP#" may work, but may produce an annoying error message every time you click on a button in the tutorial. Since earlier versions of MDL Chime are not available, the solution is to upgrade your Internet Explorer to version 5.5SP2 or version 6 (see below). This is free. To upgrade, in your present version of Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu at the top and select Windows Upgrade.
Macintosh PPC:
You may use only Netscape 4 -- Safari, Netscape 6 or 7, Macintosh Internet Explorer,
Mozilla, and Opera do
not work with MDL Chime (required for this tutorial).
Any version of Netscape from 3 through 4.X should work. In OS X, Netscape 4
runs only in the Classic OS 9 environment.
Problems sometimes occur in OS X but
they can be easily avoided.
How do I
get the Netscape 4.8 installer?
How do I find out my browser's version?
You must install MDL Chime (version 2 or later). Download free MDL Chime from MDL. During installation, you must select the plugins folder associated with the version of Netscape you plan to use!
Giving Netscape adequate Memory. On Mac PPC's, you need to increase the memory allocated to Netscape manually: Quit from Netscape. Locate the Netscape Application file on your hard disk. Select it. Open Finder's File menu and select Get Info. The preferred size should be set to 20000k, and the minimum size should be set to 15000k. If you have 64 MB or more of RAM, higher settings are better (e.g. 30000k and 20000k). (If you can't change the memory settings, you didn't quit Netscape.) (By the way, you should have at least 32 MB of RAM on your Mac to load large images in MDL Chime.) Restart Netscape.
G4 1 gig Memory Problem. MDL Chime 2.6SP3 fails to work on Macintosh G4's with >= 1 gigabyte of memory when running OS 9.2. There are two known solutions. First, you can run OS X, and MDL Chime will work properly in the Classic environment. Second, you can physically remove some of your hardware memory.
Repairing installed but nonfunctional MDL Chime. If, despite being installed, MDL Chime is not working properly on your Macintosh (see the "ball" test in the previous "DNA Structure" window), please use this procedure to repair your browser. MDL Chime may work from the server (on line), but fail when you try to run it from a downloaded copy. This procedure usually fixes it.
Finding your browser version:
Click on the word "Help" near the top to open the Help menu.
Then click on "About Internet Explorer" or "About Netscape" or "About Communicator".
